Why you can trust the numbers
  • The clock reads the time and time zone on your own device, so the countdown ends at midnight where you live.
  • It counts to 12:00 am on 31 October on your wall clock, so a clock change in spring or autumn does not shift the finish line.
  • Budget amounts are rounded to the cent and then balanced, so the six categories always add up to exactly the total you typed.
  • The moon phase was checked against US Naval Observatory data: all 25 new and full moons in 2027 matched within 35 minutes.

Halloween always lands on 31 October, yet the weeks before it have a habit of disappearing. This free Halloween countdown clock and party planner does two jobs on one page. The Countdown tab shows exactly how long is left, down to the second. The Party planner tab takes your party date, guest count and budget and turns them into a dated to-do list and a sensible way to split your money. There is nothing to download and no account to create.

Whether you call it a Halloween countdown timer, a days until Halloween counter or a countdown to Halloween clock, the idea is the same: one glance and you know where you stand. And because it doubles as a free Halloween party planner, you can go from checking the date to organising the whole evening without opening another page. Below you will find how the date maths works, a full guide to every button, a prep checklist you can follow week by week, worked budget examples and straight answers to the questions people ask most.

How many days until Halloween?

Because Halloween is fixed on 31 October, working out how long until Halloween is only a matter of counting the days between today and that date. The clock above does it every second and shows the result as days, hours, minutes and seconds. It counts to 12:00 am at the start of 31 October in your own time zone, which is the moment the day begins.

You will also see a figure for sleeps until Halloween. A sleep is one night, so 30 sleeps means 30 more nights before the day arrives. It is the same number as the days left on the calendar, just phrased the way children count.

The name comes from All Hallows' Eve, the evening before the Christian feast of All Saints' Day on 1 November. The ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain is usually linked to the same time of year, which is part of why late October feels the way it does.

Days until Halloween from the 1st of each month

If you just want a number to work with, this table shows how many days remain on the 1st of each month. It is written for a normal year. In a leap year, 1 January and 1 February are one day further away (304 and 273 days).

The hour figures are simply days multiplied by 24, so treat them as a guide: they can be an hour out if your clocks change between now and Halloween. The live clock avoids that problem by counting to midnight on your wall clock.

How to use this Halloween countdown clock and party planner

The tool has two tabs at the top: Countdown and Party planner. They work independently, so you can glance at the clock without ever touching the planner, or plan a party without caring about the clock. Everything runs inside your browser and the layout fits phones, tablets and desktop screens.

Reading the countdown clock

Open the Countdown tab and you will see a night scene with the next Halloween date written across the top. Underneath it, four flip cards show days, hours, minutes and seconds. Each card flips like an old split-flap departure board whenever its number changes. Below the scene, four colored tiles and a progress bar give you the details most countdown pages leave out.

On Halloween itself the caption changes to Happy Halloween, the sleeps tile reads Tonight, and the clock shows the time left before the day ends at midnight. The day after, the tool quietly moves on to next year's date. You never have to reset anything.

Using the party planner step by step

Switch to the Party planner tab. The form is short on purpose: five boxes and one choice, all of them filled in with sensible defaults so you can press the button straight away and see how the results look.

  1. Name your party. Type anything up to 40 characters. If you leave it empty, the results are titled Halloween Party.
  2. Pick the party date. It starts on the next 31 October. Choose any date from today up to two years ahead. If Halloween falls in the middle of the week, picking the nearest weekend usually fills the room better.
  3. Enter the number of guests. Use a whole number from 1 to 1000, counting everyone the budget has to cover.
  4. Enter your total budget. This is the full amount you are prepared to spend. It can include cents or pence, and it must be above zero.
  5. Choose a currency. Pick GBP, USD, EUR, CAD or AUD. The planner starts on GBP, so change it if you spend in another currency. This only changes the symbol and number format; it does not convert your money.
  6. Say who is coming. Choose Kids, Adults or Mixed. This changes how the budget is divided, because a children's party and an adult dinner party spend money differently.
  7. Press Plan my party. The form slides away and your results open in its place.

Understanding your results

The results screen opens with your party name and date, then three tiles: Days to go, Per guest and Guests. Per guest is your total budget divided by the number of guests, rounded to the nearest cent. If the party is today, the first tile reads Today instead of a number.

Under the tiles are two switches, and each one opens a different view.

Prep timeline lists eight steps, each with a date worked backwards from your party day. The small dot beside each step tells you its status: green for upcoming, orange for today, pink for a step that is already late, and purple for the party itself. A late step shows Do today instead of a date in the past, so you never see a deadline that has already gone by.

Budget split shows a donut chart and a legend with six categories: food and drink, candy and treats, decorations, costumes, games and fun, and a buffer. Every slice shows its percentage and its amount. The amounts are balanced to the cent, so they add up to exactly the budget you entered.

Add to calendar, copy plan, edit and reset

Add to calendar downloads a small .ics file with one all-day event for each of the eight steps. You can open it with Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook and most other calendar apps. Steps that were already late are placed on the day you made the plan, so they show up as things to do right away.

Copy plan puts a plain-text version of the whole plan on your clipboard: the party name and date, guests, budget, cost per guest, every step with its date, and the budget split. Paste it into a notes app, a group chat or an email to share the plan with whoever is helping.

Edit takes you back to the form with your numbers still in place, so you can change the guest count or budget and plan again in a few seconds. Reset on the form puts every field back to its starting value.

Your party details stay on your device. The planner does not send them anywhere and does not save them, so the plan is gone once you close or refresh the page. Use Add to calendar or Copy plan first if you want to keep it.

What the error messages mean

Halloween prep checklist: the 8-step timeline

The planner's timeline starts three weeks before the party and counts down to the day itself. The spacing is deliberate: the early steps are the ones that depend on other people or on deliveries, and the late steps are the ones that go off if you do them too soon. Here is the logic behind each step, so you can adjust it if your own situation is different.

The 21-day runway

The eight steps fall into three phases. Each bar segment is sized by the number of days it covers.

OrganisePrepare
21 to 10 days out: invitations, costumes, decorations10 to 2 days out: menu, music, games, big shopLast 2 days: decorate, carve, party
StepDays beforeWhy this timing works
Send invitations21Three weeks gives people time to check their diaries, and costume parties need notice.
Choose and order costumes14Online orders can take a week or more, and you want room for a return or a size swap.
Buy decorations10Shelves are fullest early on, and you can test lights and replace batteries without a rush.
Plan the food and drinks menu7A week is enough to settle the menu, check allergies and diets, and write the shopping list.
Sort music, games and prizes4Time to build a playlist, gather game props and wrap small prizes.
Big food and drinks shop2Fresh food stays fresh, and you still have a day to fetch anything you missed.
Decorate and carve pumpkins1A freshly carved pumpkin only looks its best for a few days, so carve late.
Party day0Everything is ready, so you can enjoy it.

Several of these steps have a tool of their own. When you reach the costume step, the spooky name and costume idea generator can break a creative block. For the decorating step, the pumpkin carving stencil size estimator helps you pick a stencil that actually fits your pumpkin. And before the big shop, the Halloween party food and drink calculator and the Halloween candy calculator tell you how much to buy so you do not run short or waste money.

What if you are short on time?

Enter your real party date and the planner will mark every step that should already be done as Do today. Do not panic when several turn pink at once. Send digital invitations first, order the costumes with the fastest delivery you can find, and merge the decorations and menu steps into the same evening. A smaller, simpler party planned in a week is better than a perfect one that never happens.

Halloween party budget split: where the money goes

A budget is easier to follow when it is already divided into categories. The planner divides your total into six parts and changes the proportions depending on who is coming. These are starting points, not rules: a party with a big dinner will want more for food, and a party at a home full of decorations will want less.

Notice the 10 percent buffer in every column. It is the part of a budget people tend to skip and then wish they had: an extra bag of ice, a replacement pack of cups, a guest who brings a friend. If you do not need it, you have a little spent on something nicer. If you do, it saves the evening.

A worked example

Say you are hosting a mixed party for 20 guests with a budget of 200 in your own currency. Choose Mixed, enter 20 and 200, and the planner returns these figures. They add up to exactly 200.00.

How the guest list changes the cost per guest

The Per guest tile is the quickest way to test whether a plan is realistic. With the same budget of 200, the figure falls fast as the guest list grows, which is why a few extra invitations can quietly change what you can afford to serve.

If the number looks too low, you have four honest options: invite fewer people, ask guests to bring a dish, make some decorations yourself, or raise the budget. For a more detailed, line-by-line version of your spending, the Halloween party budget calculator lets you go deeper than this quick split.

Halloween weekdays and moon phases, 2026 to 2032

The date never moves, but the weekday does. It shifts forward by one each year, or by two after a leap day. That matters for planning: a Saturday Halloween is a gift, while a Tuesday one means choosing between a school-night party and moving it to the nearest weekend. The table shows what to expect, plus the last Saturday on or before Halloween, which is the usual choice when 31 October falls midweek.

YearWeekdayNearest SaturdayMoon that night

2030Thursday26 OctWaxing crescent (32%)
2031Friday25 OctWaning gibbous (98%)

The moon figures are for the evening of 31 October (20:00 UTC) and shift a few percent depending on where you live, so treat them as a guide. The Moon that night tile on the countdown tab works it out for 8 pm in your own time zone. The calculation was tested against the US Naval Observatory's published moon phase data.

A small fact for moon watchers: Halloween 2028 and 2031 both come within a couple of percent of a full moon, while 2027 and 2032 are close to a new moon, which makes for the darkest and spookiest skies.

Frequently asked questions

Tap a question to open the answer.

How many days until Halloween?

Halloween is on 31 October every year, so the answer is the number of days between today and that date. The live clock at the top of this page works it out for you and updates every second. If you only want a rough idea, the reference table above lists the days left from the 1st of every month.

How long until Halloween in hours, minutes and seconds?

The flip clock shows days, hours, minutes and seconds left until 12:00 am on 31 October in your own time zone. For a quick hour count, multiply the days by 24. The total can be an hour out if your clocks change between now and Halloween, which is why the clock counts to midnight on your wall clock rather than in raw hours.

What does sleeps until Halloween mean?

A sleep is one night. If there are 12 sleeps until Halloween, you will go to bed 12 times before the big day arrives. Children often count this way because it feels more real than a date, and the Sleeps to go tile on the countdown tab shows the number for you.

Will the Halloween countdown work in my time zone?

Yes. The countdown reads the clock and time zone set on your own phone or computer, so it ends at midnight where you are. Two people in different countries will see slightly different hours and minutes because midnight on 31 October reaches each place at a different moment.

What happens to the countdown on and after Halloween?

On 31 October the caption changes to Happy Halloween, the sleeps tile says Tonight, and the clock shows how much of the day is left. From 1 November the tool rolls over by itself and starts counting down to the next Halloween, so you never need to reset it.

Is this Halloween countdown and party planner really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no download and no paid tier. Open the page, enter your party details and press the plan button. It works in a normal web browser on phones, tablets and computers.

How early should I start planning a Halloween party?

Three weeks is a comfortable runway, and it is where the planner's timeline begins: invitations go out 21 days before the party. You can plan with less time. If a step should already be finished, the planner marks it Do today so you can see what to catch up on first.

How much should I budget per guest for a Halloween party?

There is no single right figure because it depends on the menu, the venue and whether guests bring something. Use the Per guest tile as a quick check: enter your real budget, then try different guest numbers and see how the figure changes. The cost per guest chart on this page shows how quickly it drops as the guest list grows.

Can I change the budget split percentages?

The percentages are fixed starting points for kids, adults and mixed parties. Treat the amounts as a guide and move money between categories by hand where your party needs it. For a breakdown with your own categories, try the Halloween party budget calculator linked in the more tools section.

Does the planner save my party plan?

No. Nothing is stored and your party details are not sent anywhere, so the plan disappears when you close or refresh the page. Press Add to calendar or Copy plan before you leave if you want to keep it.

Which currencies can I choose?

You can choose GBP, USD, EUR, CAD or AUD. The currency setting only changes the symbol and the way numbers are written. It does not convert money, so enter your budget in the currency you will actually spend.

How accurate is the moon phase on the countdown tab?

The moon calculation was checked against the US Naval Observatory's published dates for all 25 new and full moons in 2027, and every one landed within 35 minutes. The percentage shown is for 8 pm local time on 31 October. What you see in the sky will also depend on cloud cover and where you stand.

Can I add the countdown to my own website?

Yes. The last section of this page has a ready-made iframe code. Copy it, paste it into the HTML of your page or blog post, and the tool will appear there.
