Rates, thresholds and figures can change

Many of our tools use rates and limits that the government or other organisations change from time to time, for example tax bands, National Insurance rates, VAT, stamp duty thresholds, student loan repayment thresholds and energy price caps. We update the tools when we notice a change, but there can be a delay between an official change and the day our tool shows it.

Currency and exchange rate figures come from third-party data. They may be delayed and may differ from the rate your bank, card provider or money transfer service gives you.

Money, tax and property calculators

This covers our salary, take-home pay, VAT, stamp duty, mortgage, loan repayment, student loan, inheritance tax, compound interest, ROI, discount and similar tools. The result depends entirely on the numbers you type in and on the rules we have built into the tool.

• Your real tax bill or repayment may be different because of your tax code, pension contributions, other income, allowances, reliefs, residency status or other personal factors that a simple tool cannot cover.
• Mortgage and loan results are illustrations. Your lender decides the actual rate, fees and terms.
• Inheritance tax and similar calculations can be complicated. Please take professional advice for anything involving an estate, a trust or a large sum.

Health and wellbeing tools

Tools such as the BMI calculator, sleep calculator, weight loss percentage calculator, water intake calculator and life expectancy calculator give general, statistical or rule-of-thumb results.

• They do not diagnose any condition and they are not medical advice.
• BMI is a rough guide and does not take into account things like muscle mass, age or ethnic background. A life expectancy result is a statistical estimate, not a prediction about you.

Travel, study and exam tools

• Schengen calculator: this helps you estimate how many days you have used in the Schengen area. Border officers and the relevant authorities make the final decision, and rules can change. Always check the official guidance for your own situation before you travel.
• CSCS mock test: this is practice material only. It is not the official test, the questions may not match the real exam, and using it does not guarantee that you will pass.
• University grade calculator: universities set their own marking and classification rules. Check with your university for your official result.

Cooking, energy, building and everyday tools

• Cooking tools, such as the gammon cooking calculator, give guide times only. Always follow the instructions on the packaging, make sure food is cooked all the way through, and check for allergens.
• Energy, fuel and EV charging calculators depend on your tariff, vehicle, driving style and other things we cannot know. Your real costs may be higher or lower.
• The house construction cost calculator gives a rough budget figure. Real costs depend on location, design, materials and builders, so please get written quotes before you make plans or commit to spending.
• Unit converters round their results. If you need exact values for engineering, scientific or professional work, check them yourself.
