UK Tipping Law — 2024 Update
Your rights as a customer
✅ Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 — Effective October 2024:

From October 2024, UK employers are legally required to pass 100% of all tips, gratuities, and service charges to workers. Employers can no longer keep any portion.

🔸 Service Charge: If a restaurant adds a "discretionary service charge", you are legally allowed to ask for it to be removed if you were unhappy with the service.

🔸 Don't Double-Tip: If a service charge is already included in your bill, you are not expected to leave an additional tip. Always check your receipt carefully.

🔸 Minimum Wage: UK hospitality workers earn at least £11.44/hour (National Living Wage for 21+), so tips are a genuine bonus — not survival income as in the US.
Frequently Asked Questions
UK tipping questions answered
Is tipping mandatory in the UK?
No, tipping is entirely optional in the UK. Unlike in the US, UK hospitality workers are paid at least the National Living Wage (£11.44/hour for 21+), so tips are genuinely a bonus for good service rather than essential income. However, tipping is a valued way to show appreciation in restaurants, taxis, and hotels.
Should I tip if a service charge is already added?
No — if a service charge (usually 12.5%) is already included in your bill, there's no need to add another tip. Always check your bill before tipping. If you were unhappy with the service, you can legally ask for the discretionary service charge to be removed.
Do you tip in UK pubs?
Not usually. When ordering at the bar, it's not customary to tip. Some people offer to buy the bar staff a drink ("and one for yourself") as a gesture. If you have full table service at a gastro-pub, a small tip of 5–10% is appreciated.
How much should I tip a taxi driver in the UK?
Most British passengers round up the fare to the nearest pound, or add 10% for good service. For example, a £7.60 fare — you might pay £8 or £9. For London black cabs, rounding up is standard. For Uber, tipping in-app is optional but appreciated.
Do workers actually receive tips in the UK?
Yes — since October 2024, the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act requires employers to pass 100% of all tips to workers. Before this law, some employers kept a portion. Always tip directly in cash or ask staff if card tips go directly to them, as some payment systems vary.
Should I tip on the pre-VAT or post-VAT amount?
In the UK, most people tip on the total bill as shown (which includes 20% VAT). There's no strong convention to tip on pre-VAT amounts like in some other countries. Simply use the total as shown on your receipt — that's what this calculator does by default.
