Why you can trust this converter
  • New York's daylight saving rules come from the standard time zone database built into your browser, so EST and EDT switch on the correct dates for any year.
  • India has no daylight saving, so IST stays fixed at UTC+5:30 all year. Nothing seasonal is ever added on the India side.
  • The two awkward moments, the hour that vanishes in March and the hour that repeats in November, are detected and explained instead of quietly guessed.
  • We tested the engine against the time zone database on hundreds of thousands of random dates and times, in both directions, and found no mismatches.

Booking a call between New York and India looks like a simple sum until you notice the half hour. New York changes its clocks twice a year, India never does, and India's offset from UTC isn't even a whole number of hours. Put those three facts together and it is easy to be an hour out, or to schedule something for a time that doesn't exist on that date.

The EST to IST converter above does the arithmetic for you. This page explains what it is doing, how to get the most out of it, which gap applies on which date, and how to find a meeting slot that doesn't wreck anybody's night. Everything here is checked against the 2026 daylight saving calendar.

EST to IST time difference at a glance

If all you need is the headline number: India Standard Time (IST) is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST), and 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). Which of those two gaps applies depends on the calendar date, not on the abbreviation people happen to type.

Quick answer: 9 AM in New York is 7:30 PM in India in winter (EST) and 6:30 PM in summer (EDT). Add 10:30 in winter, add 9:30 in summer.

ZoneUTC offsetActive
ESTUTC-5Nov to Mar
EDTUTC-4Mar to Nov
ISTUTC+5:30All year

EST runs from the first Sunday of November to the second Sunday of March. EDT covers the rest of the year.

India's row never changes, which is the whole reason the gap moves. Only New York shifts, so the EST to IST time difference is really a question about what New York is doing that week.

How to use this EST to IST converter

The converter sits at the top of this page. Here is what every part of it does, in roughly the order you will use them.

  1. Glance at the two live clocks. The blue card is New York, the orange card is India, and both tick every second. The small tag under New York's time reads EDT or EST, so you know which season it is without opening a calendar. The figure between the cards, something like +9:30, is today's gap in hours and minutes. The little clock faces darken after dark in each city, which is a quick hint about whether you are about to wake somebody up.
  2. Choose a direction. The two tabs switch between EST to IST and IST to EST. The labels change to "Date in New York" or "Date in India", and the accent colour moves from blue to orange so you can see at a glance which way you are converting. If a result is already showing when you switch, the converted time is carried into the boxes, so you can check an answer by flipping it straight back.
  3. Enter the date and the time. Both boxes start on the current moment. The date matters more than people expect, because the gap is 9:30 on some dates and 10:30 on others. On a phone, tapping a box opens the normal date or time picker. On a keyboard, pressing Enter converts.
  4. Use the quick chips when you are in a hurry. The row of rounded buttons under the boxes fills in a time for you. "Now" jumps back to the current moment. In EST to IST mode you also get NYSE opens 9:30 AM, NYSE closes 4:00 PM, and common slots such as 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM. In IST to EST mode the chips are 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, 6:00 PM, 7:30 PM and 9:00 PM. A chip changes only the time and keeps your date, and the Convert button gives a small nudge to remind you to press it. On narrow screens the row slides sideways.
  5. Pick Auto EST / EDT or Always EST. Auto, the default, follows the real clocks in New York: EDT in summer and EST in winter. Always EST (UTC-5) pins New York to fixed standard time all year, which suits server logs, contracts or old schedules that literally say "EST". If you choose it for a summer date, a note under the result reminds you that New York's wall clocks are actually showing EDT that day.
  6. Press Convert. The result card opens with the converted time in large digits that roll into place, the full date, and a badge saying Same day, Next day or Previous day. The line under it spells out what was converted and which gap was used. On a phone the result stays hidden until you press Convert, and the page scrolls back to the top of the tool so you can see it straight away. On a laptop it opens beside the form. Reset puts the tool back on the current time.
  7. Read the little extras. Copy gives you a plain sentence such as "9:00 AM EDT (Mon, 19 Oct 2026) = 6:30 PM IST (Mon, 19 Oct 2026)" to paste into an email or chat, with both dates included so nobody has to guess the day. The yellow badge appears whenever the date changes. If you edit a box after converting, the result dims and a yellow banner says the inputs changed, so you never read an out-of-date answer by mistake.
  8. Scan the hour by hour strip. Two rows, NY and IN, show the hours either side of your chosen time, with your time ringed. Yellow means working hours (9 to 6), light blue means awake but off the clock, and dark navy means night. A thin red mark and a weekday label such as Tue show where midnight falls, so date changes are easy to spot. Look for a column where both rows are yellow or light blue and you have found a time that suits both people. The number of columns adapts to your screen, so phones show fewer hours than laptops.
  9. Flip between 12h and 24h. The switch at the top right changes the clocks, chips, result and the hour strip together.
  10. Watch for the daylight saving notes. If you enter a time that does not exist, such as 2:30 AM on the March change day, the note tells you and converts it as 3:30 AM EDT. If you enter a time that happens twice, such as 1:30 AM on the November change day, it shows the first one (EDT) and offers two small buttons so you can switch to the second (EST).

EST, EDT and ET: what is the difference?

Most people write "EST" all year, even though New York is on EDT for roughly eight months of it. In everyday use "EST" has quietly come to mean "New York time", and the Auto mode in the converter treats it that way. That is almost always what the person who wrote the invite meant.

Here is the tidy version. Eastern Time (ET) is the name of the zone. It uses EST (UTC-5) in winter and EDT (UTC-4) in summer. Besides New York, it covers Washington DC, Boston, Atlanta, Miami and, across the border, Toronto. So if you are searching for New York time to India time, you are after the same conversion as Eastern Time to India Time.

The other half of the pair has its own habit of confusing people. "IST" can mean three different things depending on who is writing, and this converter is about the Indian one.

IST stands forUTC offset
India Standard TimeUTC+5:30
Irish Standard TimeUTC+1
Israel Standard TimeUTC+2

Irish Standard Time is the name for Ireland's summer time. Israel Standard Time is Israel's winter time.

Is IST 9.5 or 10.5 hours ahead of EST?

Both numbers are right. They just describe different seasons. Taken literally, EST to IST is always 10 hours 30 minutes, because EST is UTC-5 and IST is UTC+5:30. The 9 hours 30 minutes figure is the EDT to IST gap, which is the one you actually live with whenever New York is on daylight time. Here is how 2026 breaks down.

2026 periodNew YorkIST ahead
1 Jan to 7 MarEST10h 30m
8 Mar to 31 OctEDT9h 30m
1 Nov to 31 DecEST10h 30m

The switches happen at 2:00 AM New York time.

Figures show how many hours and minutes India is ahead. Winter gap covers 127 days, summer gap 238 days.

Count the days and the "usual" gap looks different. In 2026, IST is 9:30 ahead of New York for 238 days and 10:30 ahead for 127 days. If you only carry one number in your head, 9 and a half is the safer bet for most of the year, but it will be wrong for about four months.

EST to IST conversion table

Use this table when you only need a quick look at the common hours. The first column is the time in New York. The next two show the matching time in India in winter (EST) and in summer (EDT). A small +1 means the India time falls on the next calendar day.

Winter means EST, from November to March. Summer means EDT, from March to November.

Every row comes from the same two rules: add 10:30 in winter, add 9:30 in summer. For any time that isn't listed, the converter above does the arithmetic and checks the date as well.

9 AM EST to IST and other meeting times

9 AM EST to IST is the question that sends most people here, so here is the answer first. At 9:00 AM EST, India reads 7:30 PM on the same day. If New York is on daylight time, 9:00 AM EDT is 6:30 PM in India. That one hour is the story behind most missed calls in spring and autumn.

Some other times worth remembering:

  • 9:30 AM in New York, when US markets open, is 8:00 PM in India in winter and 7:00 PM in summer.
  • Noon in New York is 10:30 PM in India in winter and 9:30 PM in summer.
  • 5:00 PM, the end of a typical US workday, is already 3:30 AM the next morning in India in winter, or 2:30 AM in summer.
  • Friday 6:00 PM in New York is Saturday 4:30 AM in India in winter, or 3:30 AM in summer.

The Friday example catches people out more than any other. A deadline that feels like a comfortable Friday evening in New York is already Saturday morning in India, so the practical deadline for the India side is earlier in the week than it looks.

IST to EST converter

Going the other way works exactly the same. Switch to the IST to EST tab, enter the India date and time, and the result shows New York time with the right EST or EDT label. To do it yourself, subtract 10:30 in winter and 9:30 in summer.

IndiaNY winterNY summer

7:30 PM9:00 AM10:00 AM
9:00 PM10:30 AM11:30 AM
11:00 PM12:30 PM1:30 PM

A small -1 means the previous calendar day in New York.

Look at the first rows. A normal 9:00 AM start in India is 10:30 PM the previous day in New York in winter, and 11:30 PM in summer. A morning in India is really the New York night before, which is why US teams working with India often shape their evenings around handovers.

EST to IST during daylight saving

India does not move its clocks, so every change in the gap comes from the US side. On the second Sunday of March, New York jumps forward and the gap shrinks from 10:30 to 9:30. On the first Sunday of November the clocks fall back and it grows again. Both changes happen at 2:00 AM New York time.

YearDST startsDST ends
2026Sun 8 MarSun 1 Nov
2027Sun 14 MarSun 7 Nov
2028Sun 12 MarSun 5 Nov
2029Sun 11 MarSun 4 Nov
2030Sun 10 MarSun 3 Nov

Dates are the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November.

Why does this matter for a recurring meeting? Imagine a weekly call fixed at 8:00 AM New York time. Until the March change it is 6:30 PM in India. The week after, it is 5:30 PM, because New York moved and India didn't. Nothing changed for New York, but the Indian calendar sees the call slide one hour earlier. In November it slides one hour later. If you invite people in India, send the invite in New York time, let their calendar convert it, and confirm the time again around those two Sundays.

Why is there a half hour difference?

India runs on a single time zone based on the 82.5 degrees east meridian, which runs through Uttar Pradesh near Prayagraj. The Earth turns 15 degrees every hour, so 82.5 degrees works out to exactly five and a half hours ahead of UTC. Sri Lanka uses the same offset.

New York sits on whole-hour offsets, UTC-5 or UTC-4. The gap between a whole-hour zone and a half-hour zone always ends in :30, which is why the EST to IST half hour difference never lands neatly. 9:00 in New York becomes :30 in India. It is also the most common reason quick mental maths goes wrong. People add 10 hours, forget the 30 minutes, and end up half an hour out.

Best meeting windows for New York and India

The Indian workday and the US workday barely touch. Here is the same day drawn in New York time, midnight to 11 PM, for both seasons. Orange shows India's 9 to 6 working day, and blue shows New York's 9 to 5.

In summer the two working days miss each other by just half an hour. India finishes at 6:00 PM, which is 8:30 AM in New York, and New York starts at 9:00. In winter the gap widens to an hour and a half, because India's 6:00 PM becomes 7:30 AM in New York.

That makes the realistic overlap an early New York morning and an Indian evening. Some slots that tend to work:

  • 8:00 AM in New York, which is 5:30 PM in India in summer or 6:30 PM in winter.
  • 8:30 AM in New York, which is 6:00 PM in summer or 7:00 PM in winter, a fair end to the day for most Indian teams.
  • 9:00 AM in New York, which is 6:30 PM in summer or 7:30 PM in winter, fine if the India side is flexible.

A few habits that save everyone's sanity:

  • Put both times and the date in every invite. "Tuesday 8:30 AM ET / 6:00 PM IST" leaves no room for doubt.
  • Rotate the awkward slot. If one side always takes the early start or the late finish, resentment follows.
  • Record calls or write short notes, so whoever couldn't attend can catch up during their own working hours.
  • If late-night calls are part of your routine, our sleep calculator can help you pick bedtimes that fit around them.
  • Counting working days to a deadline? Teams based in the UK can use our date calculator with UK bank holidays to keep the dates honest.

Who needs New York time to India time?

People look up this conversion for all sorts of reasons. A few that come up often:

  • Remote teams and freelancers. Developers, designers, support agents and recruiters working across both countries need handover windows that don't fall at 3 AM for somebody.
  • Students and job seekers. A webinar or interview advertised for 2:00 PM EST starts at 12:30 AM in India in winter, or 11:30 PM in summer. It is worth checking before you decide how late to stay up.
  • Families. Calling relatives in India from the US is easiest on a New York morning or a weekend, when it is evening in India. A 7:00 PM call from New York would reach them at 5:30 AM in winter or 4:30 AM in summer.
  • Cricket and entertainment fans. A match that starts at 7:30 PM in India begins at 10:00 AM in New York in summer, or 9:00 AM in winter.
  • Travellers. Planning a trip between the two countries? Our estimated time of arrival calculator handles the journey time, and the converter handles the clock change at the other end.
  • Traders and market watchers. The New York session falls in India's evening and night, as the table shows.

Summer means EDT, winter means EST. NYSE regular hours are 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM New York time. NSE regular hours are 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST. Holidays and special sessions can differ.

There is no overlap between the two cash-market sessions. When one is open, the other is shut.

How to convert EST to IST by hand

Away from a screen? You can do it in your head in three steps.

  1. Work out whether New York is on EST or EDT on that date. Between the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November it is EDT. The rest of the year it is EST.
  2. Add 10 hours 30 minutes for EST, or 9 hours 30 minutes for EDT. A shortcut: add 10 hours, then add 30 minutes in winter or take 30 minutes away in summer.
  3. If you pass midnight, move to the next calendar day. Say the date out loud when you share the answer.

Take 4:45 PM EDT. Add 10 hours and you get 2:45 AM, then take away 30 minutes to land on 2:15 AM the next day. For 4:45 PM EST you add the 30 minutes instead and get 3:15 AM the next day. Going the other way, subtract instead of add.

Mistakes worth avoiding:

  • Using 10:30 all year, or 9:30 all year. Check the date first.
  • Forgetting the date change. Anything after 1:30 PM in winter, or 2:30 PM in summer, lands on the next day in India.
  • Mixing up 12:00 AM and 12:00 PM. 12:00 AM is midnight and 12:00 PM is noon.
  • Assuming IST changes with the seasons. It doesn't.
  • Reading IST as Irish or Israel Standard Time.

Frequently asked questions

Tap a question to see the answer.

What is the EST to IST time difference?

IST is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of EST. When New York moves to daylight time (EDT), the gap shrinks to 9 hours 30 minutes. India never changes its clocks, so every shift in the gap comes from the US side.

Is IST 9.5 or 10.5 hours ahead of EST?

Strictly speaking, EST to IST is 10.5 hours, because EST is UTC-5 and IST is UTC+5:30. The 9.5 hour figure is the gap between EDT and IST. New York is on EDT from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November, so the 9.5 hour gap is the one you meet for most of the year. In 2026 that is 238 days out of 365.

How do I convert EST to IST manually?

Add 10 hours 30 minutes to the EST time. If New York is on daylight time (EDT), add 9 hours 30 minutes instead. If the answer passes midnight, move to the next date. A shortcut is to add 10 hours first, then add 30 minutes in winter or take 30 minutes away in summer.

What is 9 AM EST in IST?

9:00 AM EST is 7:30 PM IST on the same day. If New York is on EDT, 9:00 AM is 6:30 PM IST. Use the converter above if you are not sure which one applies on your date.

What time is it in India when it's EST?

Take the New York time and add 10 hours 30 minutes. Noon EST, for example, is 10:30 PM in India. When New York is on EDT, add 9 hours 30 minutes, so noon is 9:30 PM. The two live clocks at the top of the converter show both times right now.

Does India observe daylight saving time?

No. India uses one time zone, UTC+5:30, all year round. Daylight saving was tried only briefly in the past, during the Second World War and in some of the later conflicts, and it is not in use today.

Does the EST to IST gap change during daylight saving?

Yes, but only because New York changes. When clocks in New York go forward in March, the gap falls from 10:30 to 9:30. When they go back in November, it rises to 10:30 again. India stays put in both cases.

Why is there a half hour difference between EST and IST?

India's time zone is based on the 82.5 degrees east meridian. The Earth turns 15 degrees an hour, so that longitude works out to five and a half hours ahead of UTC. New York is on a whole-hour offset, which leaves a 30 minute remainder in every conversion.

Can I use this as an IST to EST converter too?

Yes. Tap the IST to EST tab, enter the date and time in India, and press Convert. The result shows New York time with the correct EST or EDT label, and tells you if it falls on the previous day.

What if I pick a time that does not exist, or happens twice?

On the second Sunday of March, New York clocks jump from 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM, so times in between never occur. The converter tells you and treats your entry as the matching time after the jump. On the first Sunday of November, 1:00 AM to 1:59 AM happens twice. The converter shows the first one (EDT) and gives you two buttons so you can switch to the second (EST).

Which places does it cover?

Any place on Eastern Time, including New York, Washington DC, Boston, Atlanta, Miami and Toronto. For India it covers the whole country, since Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad all share the same time. The date box accepts years from 1950 to 2100.

Is the converter free, and can I put it on my own website?

It is free to use and free to embed. The embed code is at the bottom of this page. Copy it, paste it into any page that accepts custom HTML, and the converter will appear there.
